I learned two things from Ms.Burtz’s speech.
First, I learned her career and vision from her experience. She
worked for a trading company in Tokyo few years ago. At first, she started
trial running as one of her hobby with her husband. Then she went to
Philippines to investigation educational issues as an NPO. There are many
children who cannot get an education because they are not well off. She then
transferred to Musashino Art University where she studied the design program
from an art thinking. From these experience, she started to be interested in
social issues. After going through various processes, she moved to Tokamachi
city, Niigata prefecture, and held a trail running event that was suited to the
area.
Second, I learned the appeal point of trail running. Trail running
is not just a sport, but also sport that anyone can enjoy, from children to
adults. Moreover, since we cooperate with local people regardless of age, it’s
becoming a place for exchange and communicate. By exploring the local nature
once again, you can make new discoveries. Actually, when they develop trail
running courses, there are a lot of unknown geographical features and plants.
It’s also an opportunity to learn about biodiversity.
However, there are still some problems, “How
to monetize trail running?”. It need to do more advertising to raise the
participation fees.
From her experience, there are two points I
want to apply to my business plan. One is to emphasize fieldwork, which
involves actually visiting and conducting research because most things can only
be understood through actual experience. She also moved to Tokamachi city, then
found trail running. Other one is when I appeal my city, I want to promote the
hidden attractions, not the already exiting tourist spot. By focusing on hidden
things, you can expand the potential on my city.
The
most impressive thing about her speech was that she moved Niigata to contribute
to revitalizing the local area. I felt that I could contribute more by
interacting with people. I want to be as active as her.
